Travel Far, Tread Lightly
At Headwaters, fly fishing is what takes us there, but it's everything beyond the water that makes the journey unforgettable. We're drawn to wild places, remote landscapes, different cultures and the people who call these places home. We believe in travelling with an open mind, respecting local traditions and leaving as little trace of our presence as possible. Our hosted adventures aren't about ticking destinations off a list. They're about genuine experiences, shared stories, good people and a deeper connection to the places we're fortunate enough to explore. Travel far, tread lightly and never lose sight of what makes these wild places special.

Echos from the Water
Trip of a lifetime! Had a brilliant time with Headwaters at Cape Lodge. Excellent fly fishing with expert, helpful, and patient guides who got us onto multiple permit, Tuskfish, grey and blue Bastards each day; not to mention the Queenies, Blue salmon and Trevally.  Accomodation also was exemplary with prime service delivered by the hostesses and chef. Our trip was so good we’re trying to organise another.

An Unforgettable CXI Adventure with a Stellar Host!
Â
I recently did a hosted fly fishing trip to Christmas Island with Justin from Headwaters Art and Fly, and it was an absolute trip of a lifetime. We were fortunate to be a small group of four, which meant fantastic camaraderie and the luxury of having our own rooms in the rustic, clean, and comfortable accommodation.
Â
Justin’s leadership was put to the test before we even arrived when one of our group found out in Fiji that his bags were stuck in Brisbane. Justin and the team didn't miss a beat—everyone chipped in with gear and clothing, completely saving the trip for him. On the flats, the fishing was pure adrenaline. While the Triggers and elusive GTs gave me a run for my money, the Bonefish action was incredible. The absolute standout moment was hooking into what would have been my personal best bonefish; it took me into my backing twice before a medium blacktip reef shark charged out of nowhere and bit it clean in half right behind the gills!
Justin's expert hosting, calm problem-solving, and passion for the flats made this an unforgettable experience. I can’t recommend a hosted trip with Headwaters Art and Fly highly enough!
Â
I am returning for 2027 September and managed to convince my older brother, who lives in South Africa to join us.
Â
I can’t wait for this trip.

Justin is the ideal person to host a fishing trip. His easy-going temperament, expedition mindset and clear communication make him an ideal trip leader. I was particularly impressed by the way he worked with the local guides and lodge staff to ensure every aspect of the trip ran smoothly and to a high standard. He’s a great fishing companion, an excellent photographer and, as I discovered first-hand, exactly the sort of person you want alongside you when things don’t go to plan. His ability to adapt, find solutions and keep a positive outlook helped turn what could have been a trip-ending setback into an unforgettable experience. I’ll definitely be joining Justin on future trips and would highly recommend him to anglers of all abilities and levels of experience.

Cape York Weipa – A World-Class Fly-Fishing Adventure

A hosted fly-fishing trip to Cape York with Justin Webber from Headwaters Art & Fly Shop in Mackay is an experience that’s hard to beat. The incredible sight fishing for permit, black spot tusk fish, blue bastards, trevally and barramundi makes this a truly special destination for the adventurous fly angler.

Set against the dramatic red bauxite cliffs, crystal-clear water and the remote estuary systems of Cape York, means the scenery is every bit as impressive as the fishing. There’s a real sense of being somewhere wild and untouched, with endless opportunities to sight-cast to some of Australia’s, and the worlds, most sought-after saltwater species. The wildlife is prolific where anglers can expect to see species like crocodiles, manta rays, dolphins, kangaroos, dingoes and even dugongs, with birdlife that is spectacular.
The Cape Lodge is the perfect base for such an adventure with guides that are professional, knowledgeable and a joy to be with. I felt like I learnt a decades worth of salt water fly fishing in just one week.Â

Justin’s hosted trip offers the chance to experience this remarkable part of Australia in the company of someone who knows the region and its fishing. For any fly angler looking for an exceptional combination of challenging sight fishing, remote wilderness and genuine adventure, Cape York deserves a place at the top of the list and Justin will ensure the trip becomes a lifetime memory.
